SUBSTRATUM

IMMERSIVE AUDIOVISUAL COMPOSITION  —   2025

Duration  —  8 min

Substratum explores the hidden layers of existence and identity. These invisible strata are at the same time the foundation of who we are and the obstacles we must encounter and transform in order to grow. The work approaches transcendence as a journey that unfolds through fragmentation and unity. At first, transcendence may appear as a linear movement, a path forward in a single direction. But when we experience it more deeply, it reveals itself as a cycle: each crossing brings us to a renewed self, which then again seeks a new transcendence. This cyclical process of dissolution and re-formation unfolds in a continuous flow. Rather than offering a fixed narrative, the piece invites deep focus and inner reflection, guiding the audience into a contemplative state where the boundaries between inner and outer perception begin to blur.

Substratum is primarily a meditative, introspective experience. Flowing visuals and sound create a quiet, contemplative space, inviting the audience to pause and turn their attention inward. The soundscape blends field recordings from Buddhist temples – footsteps, bells, fragments of chanting – with subtle ambient textures that emerge only when one enters a reflective state of listening. Rather than telling a story, the work offers a space for inner attention and presence, where the external audiovisual environment resonates with the viewer’s own mind.
